In Metroid Dread, Samus is in full form. The first 2D part for 19 years had been able to go more with the time.
We all not stunted badly when Nintendos E3 stream was surprisingly announced this year a new 2D metroid, which will finally end the saga launched with the first part for the NES and even appear in October. Nintendo and Developer Mercury Steam, known by Castlevania: Lords of Shadow and Metroid: Samus Returns, have planned a lot and basically also deliver a very successful result - if you know what to get involved.
Before your Metroid dread starts, you should be aware that the developers basically offer you a metroidvania game in its purest form. Lots of talk as well as a differentiated and above all unsupposed told story you will not find here. It is almost exclusively about the pure fun. In order to be able to offer as pure as possible, the developers for example give up to install very many intermediate sequences with graphic bombast, as is used, for example, players of the ORI titles. So you should make you aware of what you can expect and what does not, before you crash on Metroid Dread.
Done in the action
Immediately after the start, it s already without a big swallowing. A small introduction text roughly sketches the current situation and recapitulates the events of the predecessor Metroid: Fusion in the short run. After 19 years, a little refresher can certainly not hurt. On Planet ZDR, an X-parasite has been discovered, a highly dangerous life form, which was actually held by the galactic federation for eradication. After all, Samus had actually extinguished all X parasites in its predecessor. In order to investigate the incident, the Federation sends several E.M.M.I.-fight robots, but to which the contact breaks shortly after landing. That looks like a case for Samus. It is also promptly sent to examine the events.
The Federation should be kept right with her concern, because the situation on ZDR is out of control. Samus does not only apply to a representative of ancient predecessor civilization, even all once friendly robots want to turn them off. After a first spectacular confrontation with a warrior of the Chozo (said predecessor civilization) Samus loses all her gadgets and finds itself inside a gigantic research system. The new and most important goals: survival and flee.
After this cineastic entry, which is presented in the form of a cool movie sequence, it was already with the story. From now on, the exploration of the plant and the survival of Samus are the focus of Metroid Dread. In the gameplay passages, it quickly reveals that the developers have limited the presentation to the essentials. Although the game looks chic and optically never bored, innovation prizes wins the kind of design but none, in contrast to the technique of the title. Nintendo has released Metroid Dread in an excellent condition. During our entire season, we noticed a single ruckler. Even with the magnifying glass, we could not find any bugs, the game is never rushed. This form of polish may like to prevail with other publishers.
Although the story is more likely through absence and except for the few but very cool film sequences only by sporadic monologues of your board-Ki is pushed over the entire plant at all times something mystical and uncanny. Especially in the first area, we feel uncomfortable, because at first not clear what happened here. The constant feeling of danger and atmosphere, which in us the thought I would rather be bothered somewhere , have distinguished the developers excellent.
Pure Metroidvania without if and but
Between the smaller story sections, pure metroidvania enjoys you. You move through genre-typically enormously nested corridors, always encounters blockages that clearly clears it with certain skills or by pressing switches in other places. Not every way can be opened from the outset. For example, Samus lost its heat and cold resistance. This blocks a number of areas that you can see later if you have recovered the appropriate gadgets - Metroidvania as before. In general, Samus s skills take an important priority. The developers prove a tremendous hand to place exactly the right places the lost gadgets. This creates an excellent functioning motivational spiral, in which we always turn on the next puzzle part and thus new areas.
Of course, the areas are not free from opponents. Again and again you have to fight against Aliens. Since the developers of Mercury Steam have implemented the GunPlay - like everything else gameplay relevant also - properly and clean, the fighting in Metroid dread run smoothly and fun. In general, Samus is accurately managing that the screen mode is usually your debt. There is nothing to complain about the boss fighting. They loosen the game events in a pleasant rhythm. Although the degree of difficulty in this confrontation is noticeable, but the struggles are by no means unfair. Who understood the mechanics of the boss, can bring him to the route without a common surprise.
On your way through the world of Metroid Dread, you bums you and again on irritating design decisions. Basically, the developers with the card give you an extremely helpful tool to the hand to find you in the winding corridors. However, any indications of where it continues. Have you already uncovered a good deal of the current area and simply searches for the next point, it can certainly happen that you are busy for a while. Here more orientation help would have been useful. It does not have to be a big luminous arrow, but discreet helps spare a lot of unnecessary searching.
The thing with the robots
Early in the game, Samus pushes to the corrupted E.M.M.I.-robots that want to cut off the light. Once you are in the area of one of this adversary, the outputs are closed and a chase begins. The robots are immune to everything Samus can fire from home to them. So only the escape remains. However, if such a machine appears directly or behind Samus and the site is unknown, you have no chance and certainly die the screen death.
In such situations, it is particularly annoying that you can not rely against the robots at all. Once you pack you once, you theoretically have the chance to ward off the deadly attack. However, you have to press the X button in exactly the moment by pressing a flash before E.M.M.I. appears. To catch this timing at the right moment, is almost impossible. As a species, the confrontations with the robots unfortunately out of an annoying trial-and-error. Although the developers have hid a special shot in each of the large areas, which turns off the annoying beasts forever, but logically there are significantly more robo dogs than special shots.
Conclusion
Metroid Dread is a worthy completion of the 2D metroid games. The developers use well-tried skilfully and richer the game world here and there with new approaches. However, each player must be clear in what kind of metroidvania you get involved here. Graphic bombast and a story epic extent can not be found in Metroid Dread. Many game mechanics or features are also awarded. To do this, awaits you on high gloss polished game fun and probably purest metroidvania game including protagonist Samus recent years.
